The University of Texas at Tyler

The University of Texas at Tyler
Bringing More of the World to Our Fair City

Located in the heart of East Texas, The University of Texas at Tyler expertly provides well-respected education and thriving campus growth to our community. Residents of Tyler appreciate the beautiful 204-acre campus built on the southeast side of the city. What a treat to have a flourishing university designed around the peacefulness and charm of Harvey Lake. Aesthetically and administratively, UT Tyler is respected by Tylerites.

The university’s fast-growing student population is currently 5200 and is expected to double by 2010. First established in 1971 as an upper-level education system, UT Tyler joined the University of Texas System in 1979, becoming a four-year university in 1998. University of Texas at Tyler offers 74 highly respected undergraduate and graduate degrees in five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business and Technology, Education and Psychology, Engineering and Computer Science, and Nursing and Health Sciences.

The noteworthy faculty includes nationally and internationally educated professors of the highest-caliber, many of whom are notably distinguished as experts in their respective fields as substantiated by their academic publications. Education at UT Tyler offers an analytical, investigative, and critical-thinking approach to nourish students’ minds and initiate within them their most expansive thought processes. The University of Texas at Tyler produces leaders, scientists, researchers, artists, engineers, educators, nurses, business and technology professionals, authors – the list is endless.

UT Tyler student life is a priority with more than fifty student organizations, a spirited student activities program, intramural sports, and an NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic program that includes baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. A favorite on campus is the Louise Herrington Patriot Center, 127,312 square feet of recreational and academic opportunity. The Patriot Center, named for the family of philanthropist and excellence-in-education advocate, Louise H. Ornelas, includes the Jean Lancaster Academic Wing, Maytee Fisch Convocation Center, Jim and Bonna Bess Vaughn Recreation and Therapy Pool, and Meadows Student Lounge. In this hub of activity, students, alumni, and friends of the University discover amenities such as basketball and volleyball courts, seating for over 2,000, an indoor walking/jogging track, aerobics, free weights, state-of-the-art equipment, racquetball courts, personal trainers, and a pool/spa for recreation, family fun, and physical fitness.

Entertainment choices are plentiful on this East Texas campus and UT Tyler offers the finest event scheduling for students and members of the community alike. The R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center, including the breathtaking Braithwaite Recital Hall, showcases events that are to be rivaled by any community: Miss Saigon, Aida, John Stossel, Pippi Longstocking, LEAHY, Dionne Warwick, CATS.

Perhaps President Rodney Mabry expressed most accurately this description of the university, “UT Tyler offers small classes taught by outstanding faculty scholars, affording many of the benefits of a private university in a public university setting.” The beautiful city of Tyler, Texas, celebrates the abundance contributed to this community by The University of Texas at Tyler.

Lake Tyler - Tyler, Texas

“Lake Tyler” consists of two lakes. There is the original Lake, which the locals know as “Old Lake Tyler” or ”Lake Tyler West” and there is the “New Lake or Lake Tyler East” The two lakes are connected by a ¼ mile long channel, which is navigable by boat. There are three different school districts: Whitehouse, Arp and Chapel Hill. Proximity to both Tyler and Whitehouse (shopping), school districts, water depths and views dictate value. >>>
